WHAT IS SOUNDSTR?

Soundstr is a music recognition platform that identifies live and recorded music. Soundstr MDM (Music Data Market) is the key product. Soundstr MDM provides extensive analytics for music usage reporting to a wide range of clients, including venue owners, radio station management, musicians, labels and publishers, and rights administration clients. Client and usage-specific reports containing analytics across numerous music report kinds are now being built using sampling, streaming, and live detection capabilities.

As a DaaS (Data as a Service) solution, Soundstr MDM combines an autonomous sampling device produced by VNUE – which can be used in an interactive performance environment, such as a live music venue – with a streaming music interpretation service that ingests digital music feeds for recognition. There are multiple types of identification types managed by both methods, including exact music time stamping, exact music matching, silence identification, non-music recognition, speech recognition, and various APIs that may be used by PRO and admin clients.

It all started when…

Soundstr was originally a Cincinnati-based and venture-backed music technology startup, founded by musicians. Soundstr, acquired by VNUE in 2018, is on a mission is to create transparency around real-world music usage, to make sure stakeholders are compensated properly, and to reduce licensing costs to businesses. We want to use technology to build a more sustainable music industry by putting more money into the pockets of songwriters and businesses alike.

Soundstr’s Founder, Eron Bucciarelli previously served as a co-founder and drummer for the platinum-selling rock band, Hawthorne Heights. As a co-songwriter, Eron was due a royalty any time a Hawthorne Heights song was performed or broadcast in any business, anywhere in the world. After a performance one night, Eron sat down with the concert promoter to review the expenses. Included in the list was “Performing Rights Fee.” Immediately after tour, he dissected an entire career’s worth of royalty statements in hopes of finding royalties for his performances. Unfortunately, there was no way for his Performing Rights Organization to track when Eron played a show or when his music was broadcast in a venue. This lack of transparency meant he was not compensated for the use of his music. Frustrated and realizing many other songwriters were experiencing this problem, Eron parted ways with his band in order to build a solution.

Flash forward to VNUE. CEO Zach Bair was frustrated that his venues were constantly under bombardment by the PROs to pay “blanket license agreements” or be threatened by copyright lawsuit - even if said venues were not playing any of the PROs’ catalogs. Bair, a technologist with multiple patents, and who has stated he “always tries to automate himself out of a job,” subsequently filed provisional patents, outlining an automated system which would identify music played in venues and on radio, and which would identify the stakeholders - such as the PRO for certain works - so that the correct people would be compensated, and to help reduce costs for licensing. After Bair went public with statements about the unfair system, he was introduced to Bucciarelli through a mutual contact. The two saw eye-to-eye on the 100 year old problem in the industry, and shortly thereafter, Soundstr was acquired by VNUE, with Soundstr being remarkably similar to Soundstr, which was much further ahead.

Since then, VNUE has worked to improve upon the original Soundstr platform, and in 2021 realized close to 100% identification of recorded music, and over 70% identification of live music.
